An American watercolor portrait miniature of a striking young man with brown hair and gray eyes. The sitter is wearing a black coat with brass buttons, a white vest, shirt, and cravat. Signed "Williams" at the lower right, the painting is in the original gilt pendant frame with a cast foliate rim. The reverse of the case has a glazed aperture holding plaited brown hair.
The overall size of the portrait is 2 5/8" by 2 1/4". The condition of the painting is excellent, with no cracks, chips, or bowing. A very slight touchup of a water spot just below the signature was done by a professional conservator. The signature is original.
Note: Henry Williams (1787-1830)was born in Boston and worked in pastel, oil, wax, watercolor, engravings and silhouettes. He worked in various areas along the East Coast, attaining a stellar reputation as a miniaturist. Williams also authored the book "Elements of Drawing", and was with fellow miniaturist William M. S. Doyle in a partnership that lasted several years. Works by Williams may be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Yale Art Gallery, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. His work is highly collected and much less common than that of many oither miniaturists.
