A beautifully painted miniature portrait on ivory, signed and dated lower left "Gerald S. Hayward 1882". The sitter is an attractive young woman wearing a diamond necklace and white gown. The background is white clouds against a blue sky. This, taken with the 1883 date of the painting contrasting with the engraved 1884 date on the reverse of the cast foliate case (along with the sitter's initials of F.L.A.) would be a strong indication that this is a mourning painting, done in the year prior to her death.
The miniature and case, which has an unglazed aperture on its back, are in excellent condition, with no problems. The sight size of the painting is 3" by 2 1/2", while the overall size is 3 1/4" by 2 3/4".
NOTE: Gerald Sinclair Hayward (1845-1926) was born in Ontario, Canada. He received his early training at the Royal Academy in London from 1879 to 1883. His talent and popularity led to an exhibition of his work in New York in 1899, which spurred the revival of miniature painting in America and the founding of the American Society of Miniature Painters. Hayward was said to have received the highest number of royal commissions from the ruling families of Britain, Germany, and Russia. In the United States, he painted Theodore Roosevelt, William K. Vanderbilt, and J. P. Morgan, among others.
