A well done miniature portrait painting on natural organic material, with the sitter being Bishop William White. This piece was done based on the original work painted in enamel on copper by William Birch in 1830. This example kept very true to the original.
The painting is in excellent condition, as is its original velvet travel case, although the photo is not of the highest quality. Sight size is 1 3/8" by 1 1/8".
NOTE: William White (1748-1836) was the first bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States. He was influential in the development of this new religion and created a constitution for the church similar in its ideas to the Constitution of the United States. White served as bishop from 1787 until his death in 1836.
William Russell Birch (April, 1755 Warwickshire - August, 1834 Philadelphia) was a miniature painter, enameller, and landscape engraver and designer. Birch spent his early childhood in Warwick, and later apprenticed Sir Joshua Reynolds. He exhibited enamel portraits at the Royal Academy from 1781 to 1794.
Birch immigrated to Philadelphia in 1794 and made portrait enamels of many clients in addition to making well-known copies of portraits of George Washington, by Gilbert Stuart. He was the father of Thomas Birch, American portrait and marine painter.
