A rare miniature portrait, on natural organic material, painted by Thomas LeClear. The sitter is a young man with dark brown hair and eyes, staring almost directly at the viewer. He is dressed in a black coat with silk trim, a black tie, and a white shirt. On the reverse, the painting is signed "Painted by Thomas Le Clear in Buffalo 1842".
The miniature is in excellent condition, with no bowing, chips, cracks, or restoration. It is housed in a thermoplastic case, also without issues. The sight size of the miniature is 2 1/4" by 1 3/4", and the case size is 3 5/8" by 3 1/4".
Note: LeClear was born in Owego, NY in 1818, and by the time he was 14 was employed as a portrait and decorative painter. He spent several years, in his 20's, studying under Henry Inman. His better known full size portraits include those he did of William Cullen Bryant and Millard Fillmore. LeClear spent most of his life living and working in New York, and died in 1882. he was elected as a National Academician in 1862. His signed miniatures are rarely found and very few have appeared at auction.
