A very nicely painted miniature portrait done in watercolor on natural organic material. Signed "D.F. Ames NY" along the lower right. The sitter is a nice looking young gentleman in a blue coat with gilt buttons, a black stock tie, off-white vest and ruffled shirt. Based on the hair style and clothing the painting was done at the beginning of the period when Ames was known to work.
The miniature is without any cracks, chips, bowing, or restoration. It is of goodly size, housed in a 3" by 2 1/2" gilt pendant case with plaited hair visible behind a glazed aperture on the reverse.
NOTE: Very little is known about Daniel J. Ames (1803 - 1886), other than he was active between 1837 and 1858, the first 15 years in New York City, and thereafter in Canarsie, NY. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the American Academy. Although very few of his works are known or have come up for auction, both the Metropolitan Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum have examples in their collections.
