A mourning portrait miniature by Elizabeth (Eliza) Goodridge. The work, painted in watercolor on natural wafer, is a depiction of a young boy's head issuing from a cloud beneath. Presented in a period, and probably original, case with a glazed, but empty, aperture on the reverse.

The condition is excellent, with no flaws, as is that of the case. The overall size is 2 1/2" by 2 1/16".

NOTES: 1. Eliza Goodridge (1798-1882) was born in Templeton, MA, and spent her younger years there and in the Boston vicinity. She showed an aptitude for painting, and was probably taught the art of miniature painting by her sister, Sarah Goodridge.

Eliza's works appear in many museums, with the American Antiquarian Society and the Worcester Art Museum having multiple examples.

2. Understandably, it is often difficult in some instances to differentiate the work of the two sisters. However, while the stippling techniques and posing are similar, Eliza's skin tones have a slightly yellow cast, as do the background colors. Faces are more softly modeled than those of Sarah, and the eyes somewhat smaller.
