A rare c1835 American miniature by Mrs. Samuel Richardson (1790 - 1852), nee Schetky. It took quite a while, using various lighting settings and filters, to finally discern the almost illegible S (?) Richardson signature along the extreme right. That led me to one of the very few examples of her miniatures, one of which is in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City, MO), which confirmed my interpretation. The painting and the cast foliate case which measures 2 1/8" by 1 3/4" are in excellent condition. The reverse of the case has a glazed aperture containing a lock of hair.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE : Caroline Schetky (1790 - 1852) was born in Edinburgh, daughter of the well-known composer and musician Johann Georg Schetky. She moved to Philadelphia around 1818 and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1818 to 1826. In 1825 she married Samuel Richardson and moved to Boston shortly after, exhibiting frequently at the Athenaeum. The large majority of her works were landscapes, still lifes, and portraits.
