This painting epitomizes all the characteristics one looks for in a folk art portrait, including the whimsy that is so delightful. Note the vibrant colors, unusual treatment of anatomical features (the shortened arm, for example), and embellishments such as the chair, bonnet, shawl, book, and sheet music. All of these add up to a wonderful example for any collector of American folk art, or just as a superb display piece.

The painting is oil on artist's board, and is in exceptional condition, with a few scattered and meaningless spots of retouch, really only visible under a UV light. The period gilded frame is also in excellent condition.
Sight size is 19 1/2" by 16", and the framed size is 22 1/2" by 19 1/2".
Important Note: A very strong case can be made for attributing the painting to S.S. Packard. A similar example of his work was sold as lot 63 at the Sotheby's auction of the folk art collection of Don and Faye Walters, on October 25, 1986.
